Portable appliance testing is one of the most commonly mismanaged compliance obligations in building management
Performed inconsistently, documented poorly, with records that disappear when contractors change. PTSG Electrical Services delivers PAT and EET inspection with the same rigour we bring to every electrical compliance discipline: directly employed engineers, consistent standards, documentation that is always current.
What is PAT Testing?
Portable appliance testing (PAT) – now more accurately referred to as Electrical Equipment Testing (EET) – is the inspection and testing of portable electrical equipment to verify it is safe to use. It covers any electrical equipment that is not part of the fixed installation and can be connected via a plug.
There is no single law requiring PAT testing, but the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to ensure that electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing provides the evidence that this duty has been fulfilled.
Test frequency is risk-based: equipment in high-use or harsher environments requires more frequent testing than office equipment used occasionally. PTSG can advise on appropriate intervals based on IET guidance.

Why Choose PTSG Electrical Services?
PTSG Electrical Services manages complete electrical compliance for thousands of buildings nationwide. PAT testing is rarely treated with the same rigour as fixed wire or lightning protection – but the liability if an untested appliance causes a fire or injury is the same.
Our engineers are directly employed and NICEIC-qualified. The same person who tests your appliances this year will know your building next year. Every result is documented on our compliance platform, version-controlled and retrievable on demand.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
There is no single law that specifically requires PAT testing. However, several pieces of legislation – including the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and PUWER – require employers to maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition. PAT testing is the accepted means of demonstrating compliance with these obligations.
How often does PAT testing need to be done?
Testing frequency is risk-based and depends on the type of equipment, its use and its environment. IET Code of Practice guidance provides a framework: handheld equipment in industrial environments may require testing every 6 months, while office IT equipment on a fixed workstation may only need testing every 4 years. PTSG can advise on the appropriate interval for your estate.
Do you test all types of portable appliances?
Yes. We test all portable and transportable electrical equipment, including IT equipment, kitchen appliances, power tools, extension leads and AV equipment. We can also inspect fixed connected equipment.
What happens to appliances that fail the test?
Failed appliances are labelled clearly with a failed sticker and removed from service with a recommendation for repair or replacement. The failure is documented in the test report with details of the fault identified.
